5 French Menu Options to Include in Your Parisian-Style Wedding

No one knows romance quite like the French, so it’s no surprise that there are plenty of traditional French cuisine wedding dishes to choose from. In fact, there are more delicious mention options that you will ever need! If you’re planning a Parisian-style wedding, these five French menu options are must-haves.

#1: Hors d’Oeuvres & Canapés

Even the names transport you to a quiet Parisian café. Hors d’oevures and canapés are a more sophisticated version of appetizers, and are offered in a variety of styles and flavours. Typical to French cuisine, cheese, bread, and fruit platters are obvious choices, while more exotic fare like foie gras and escargot are also available.

#2: Seasonal Produce

French cuisine is all about small plates that are positively bursting with Mediterranean flavours. In a country where Provençal herbs grow like wild weeds, you can bet that the French have mastered their tastes. That’s why it’s so important to a French chef to use produce that is in season and as fresh as possible. If you’re planning on going with French cuisine for your wedding, find out what kind of vegetables and fruits are in harvest that time of year.

#3: Sorbet

Don’t look at your little soupçon of sorbet as a free dessert. Like sniffing a bowl of coffee beans when testing out perfumes, sorbet is intended to be a taste stabilizer and palate cleanser. When you take your first bite of your main course, you won’t have any of the existing flavours of your hors d’oeuvres to influence the taste. Of course, washing everything down with a dark glass of French wine will certainly help. Did we mention that wine is typically served during all courses except dessert?

#4: Boeuf Bourguignon

Or as the rest of us call Beef Burgundy, this main course is hearty, delicious, and oh-so-French. Although not suitable for all of your guests, this dish features braised beef in red wine sauce and is usually accompanied by mushrooms, potatoes, or other root vegetables. Variations of this classic are certainly possible. Ask your caterer or chef if they can prepare a Boeuf Bourguignon-inspired tofu dish!

#5: Croquembouche

Leave it to French pâtissiers to concoct a French wedding dessert that looks both mouth-watering and beautiful. Instead of a traditional wedding cake, your French wedding might include a croquembouche instead. Meaning “crunch in the mouth,” a croquembouche—or croque-en-bouche—is a cone-shaped tower of choux pastry balls filled with an assortment of custards and mousses and held together with homemade caramel. Then, edible flowers and candied decorations are added for effect. As far as presentation goes, this dessert is the pièce de résistance of French wedding cuisine.
